Hydraulic fluid provides energy transmission, lubrication and heat transfer in a hydraulic system. Today's hydraulic fluids are specifically formulated for fluid power systems and not all hydraulic fluids are hydrocarbon (petroleum) based oils. A number of properties are important when selecting a hydraulic fluid:
- Stability
- Good lubricity
- Correct viscosity
- High bulk modulus
- High heat transfer capability
- Compatible with seals and other system material
